In Fall River, William A. Flanagan made history. The 29-year-old Portuguese-American attorney will be the city's youngest mayor when he takes office in January.
Flanagan defeated City Councilor Cathy Ann Viveiros, capturing 60 percent of the vote. He received 10,874 votes while Viveiros garnered 7,090 (39 percent), according to unofficial results reported to O Jornal yesterday.
In the City Council race, all incumbents were reelected and only one candidate elected is a newcomer.
The unofficial results are as follows: Raymond Mitchell (former city councilor), 7,086; Leo Pelletier (i), 7,025; Brad Kilby (former city councilor), 6,888; Eric Poulin (newcomer), 6,837; Brian Bigelow (i), 6,414; Joseph Camara (i), 6,366; Linda Pereira (i), 6,352;.Patricia Casey (i), 5,520; and Michael Lund (i), 5,416. There are forty votes between the last spot and the tenth spot in the race and a recount or change is possible once all absentee and non-conforming ballots are counted.
In the school committee race, four of the five incumbents won seats. While Incumbent Timothy McCoy failed to be reelected, former Fall River school superintendent Richard Pavão earned a seat on the committee.
The unofficial results are: Joseph Martins (i), 7,969; Shawn Cadime (i), 7,816; Richard Pavão (newcomer), 6,747; Marilyn Roderick (i), 6,569; Mark Costa (i), 6,500.
The voter turnout in Fall River was about 38 percent.
In the Whaling City, Incumbent Scott W. Lang was elected to a third term by a landslide, defeating Portuguese-American Challenger Fernando Coelho. Lang received 8,429 votes (about 75 percent), while his challenger received 2,865.
In the City Councillor-at-Large races, all incumbents were reelected. The results were: Brian Gomes, 6,843 votes (16.72%), David Alves, 6,212 (15.18%), Debora Coelho, 5,961 (14.56%), Denis Lawrence, 5,607 (13.7%) and John T. Saunders, 5,567 (13.6%).
In Ward 3, Incumbent Kathy Dehner took 842 votes (about 60 percent) to challenger George Rogers 576. Dehner had been elected in a special election in 2008.
In Ward 4, Bruce Duarte, Jr. was reelected to a second term. He received 972 votes while his challenger Dana L. Rebeiro received 618.
In Ward 6, the seat that will be left vacant by departing City Councilor Wendy Pimental will be occupied by Joseph P. Lopes. He won 1,189 votes to opponent Ian Abreu, who received 509.
Councilors Jane L. Gonsalves (Ward 5), Steven Martins (Ward 2) and Linda M. Morad (Ward 1), ran unopposed.
In the school committee race, the results were: John J. Fletcher, 6,286; Lawrence J. Finnerty, 5,922; Joaquim "Jack" Nobrega, 5,088.
Vote turnout was around 20 percent.
In Taunton, Incumbent Charles Crowley ran unopposed in the mayoral race, receiving 5280 votes.
In the City council race, Thomas C. Hoye, Jr., garnered 3806 votes. He was followed by Ryan C. Colton 3510; David W. Pottier 3235; D.Mansour Barbour 3108; Jason D. Buffington 2981; Andrew J. Marshall 2923; Gerald A. Croteau 2914; Deborah A. Carr 2904; and S.Costa-Hanlon, 2759.
Two new members were elected to the School Committee. The results were: Peter H. Corr, 4096; David F. Souza, 4064; Joseph M. Martin, 3746; Christine A. Fagan, 3704; Dianne M. Huggon 3368; Cathal D. O'Brien, 3318; Janis B.
